UTM link builder with naming rules

Build tagged links that keep your analytics clean. It fixes case and spaces for you, warns about gaps and keeps a list in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

What UTM tags do

UTM tags are short labels added to the end of a link, such as ?utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=paid-social&utm_campaign=q4-demo-leads. When someone clicks, your analytics reads the labels and tells you which campaign sent the visit. Without them, much of your traffic shows up as “direct” or “referral” and you cannot tell what worked.

The naming rules that keep reports clean

  • Lower case only. Analytics treats LinkedIn and linkedin as two different sources.
  • Hyphens, not spaces. Spaces turn into odd characters in the link.
  • One name per thing. Pick paid-social or paid_social and keep it for every link.
  • Never tag links inside your own site. It overwrites the real source of the visit.

Source, medium and campaign in one line

Source is where the click comes from (linkedin, newsletter). Medium is the type of traffic (cpc, email, paid-social). Campaign is the push the link belongs to (q4-demo-leads). Source and medium are the two that Google Analytics 4 expects on every tagged link.

Questions

Are UTM links safe for SEO?

Yes for links you share in ads, email and social posts. Do not use them on internal links, and set a canonical tag on the page so search engines treat the tagged address as the same page.

Does this tool store my links?

Only in your own browser, through local storage, so your list is still there next time on the same device. Nothing is sent to a server.

Which UTM fields are required?

Google Analytics 4 expects source and medium. Campaign is strongly recommended, and term and content are optional extras for paid keywords and for telling ads apart.
